MATTERS OF
SUBSTANCE

An awareness guide for parents, teachers and young people

IMG_0241.JPG

In the early 2000s, the Drug Awareness & Relief Foundation (Drug ARM) responded to the need for reliable, accessible alcohol and other drug information for young people. For more than 20 years, the Matters of Substance manual has been updated and distributed free of charge to students through local schools, thanks to the generous support of community sponsors who recognise the importance of equipping young people to make healthy, informed decisions.

In 2026, Drug ARM is expanding this commitment - ensuring parents, caregivers, and teachers have trustworthy and up‑to‑date information, especially in an era of artificial intelligence, misinformation and online content that can easily mislead even the most caring adults.

All editorial content is reviewed by our experienced health promotion team, drawing on more than 175 years of organisational history in community awareness, education and harm minimisation.

In addition to providing young people and caregivers with factual, objective information about alcohol and other drugs, the manual also supports conversations about topics such as:

  • mental health

  • body image

  • peer pressure

  • emerging concerns relevant to young people today

A portion of each sponsorship also contributes directly to Drug ARM’s counselling and outreach programs that support individuals and families experiencing hardship.
